Him: I hope you like rice!
Me: If by rice you mean “small pieces of bread stuffed inside a turkey” then yes, I love rice.
Him: Stuffed inside a turkey? Lindsay. If you want turkey, you’re going to have to bring one with you.
Me: Can’t we just go to the grocery store?
Him: Yes, but I doubt you’ll find turkey. Japanese grocery stores aren’t like grocery stores in America.
Me: I don’t believe you. When you walk into a grocery store in Japan, it looks exactly like you’re walking into a grocery store in the US.
Him, laughing: It’s not like that.
Me, panicking, clearly in denial, and blatantly ignoring the fact that he has lived in Japan: YES. ACTUALLY, IT IS. Like America, Japanese grocery stores will have a HUGE frozen food section, with boxes of Bagel Bites as far as the eye can see!
Him, ignoring the whimsical look in my eye: But they won’t have turkey. They won’t have a lot of things. Just wait until the first time you have to pay $2 for an apple. Fruit is really expensive in Japan.
Me: I live on fruit! That’s crazy! Where is the nearest Trader Joe’s?
He stares.
Me: Dear God. Look. I think you’re a great guy. I really, really do. But I think we need to talk…
Delicious Dish - Raw Banana Soft serve by Gena at ChoosingRaw.com
“If you’re into the pinkberry or Red Mango, boy, do I have a treat for you. It’s the best soft serve ice cream you’ll ever taste, but it’s 100% raw, 100% vegan, 100% unprocessed, and 100% delicious. It’s also kid-friendly and ridiculously simple to make.”
Click here to see the process in pictures.
- Cut up 2-3 bananas.
- Freeze them in ziplock bags or tupperware.
- Throw them in your food processor (I’ve tried this in a Vitamix, but the results weren’t great — you could also use certain juicers).
- Let it run for about five minutes, stopping every now and then to scrape it down. The bananas should get increasingly light, fluffy, and smooth. By the time you’re done, they’ll resemble a creamy bowl of soft serve.
- Make some raw chocolate “syrup” by combining 2 tablespoons of agave nectar with 1 tablespoon raw or dark cocoa powder
MR NOTE: PERFECT DESSERT! I would love to serve this and not tell anyone how healthy it actually is.
I am beyond excited to make this ASAP.
…except the hype man was just a guy holding a Macbook Pro, and the character wasn’t in a movie yet.
Went to Aziz Ansari’s taping tonight at the Brentwood Theatre and it was fun to see bits we’d previously seen him do at Death Ray in UCB’s intimate theatre, but now in front of a large live audience for his Comedy Central Special and the “Funny People” DVD - not in a “we’re so cool because we saw him before he started to get big (or at least known),” but in a “really glad more people are being exposed to his comedy, because it’s smart and funny and not Dane Cook.”
We were there! It was great.
Working Lunch
Pasta with red wine sauce, fresh moz, homemade pesto
Fresh blueberries, strawberries.
This looks amazing. Three of my favorite things: pesto, fresh mozzarella, and strawberries. I think I’m going to have to make a Trader Joe’s run in a few minutes for one of my very favorite (insanely easy) lunches. Three ingredients! Just grab a ball of fresh buffalo mozzarella marinated in olive oil and herbs, a tomato, and a container of pesto. Chop, toss, eat. Amazing.
Wait by Alexi Murdoch
Last night, we decided to go see Away We Go. He’d already seen it and really enjoyed it, and we were looking for something really laid back to do when we got home from San Diego. Alexi Murdoch did the music so I was already hooked. The movie was very good and I liked the particularly relevant focus on moving and transition. It finished with a beautiful song.
So if I stumble, and if I fall
And if I slip now, and lose it all
And if I can’t be all that I could be
Will you wait for me?
And wait for me
And wait for me
And wait for me.
Things I Don’t Understand And Definitely Am Not Going To Talk About (well, maybe I’ll talk about it a little):
He’s never heard the T-Pain masterpiece I’m N Luv (With Wit a Stripper).
I started singing it a few days ago and he was suddenly very confused. I think this is why I’m in his life. They say people come into your life for a reason. This is the stuff they should write novels about. These moments. This is the stuff that should be made into movies featuring a crying James Franco and the music of Celine Dion.
Because I’m helpful, I’ve already started writing it.
Winter. New England. A woman is sitting alone by the ocean, wrapped in a shawl. She is staring longingly into the choppy waters. A man walks up from the old clapboard Bed and Breakfast. He wraps his arms around the woman.
Him, whispering in her ear: I heard you singing, my love.
Her, feigning embarassment and looking wistfully to the right: That was just an old song my mother used to sing me when I was a girl.
Him: It was beautiful. I wandered out here because methinks I heard a sparrow humming his gentle morning song, but instead I was greeted by an angel. Your soprano voice… it fills my soul with hope. I must know, my only love, did you learn that song whilst gallivanting about on your many worldly travels? I don’t recognize the tongue in which you speak. It’s captivating.
Her: What in the hell are you talking about?
Him: You kept repeating the word “shawty“… Is that word French? Swahili? Another mystical language of lovers?
Her: Not exactly.
The man pulls the woman into his arms and looks into her eyes, pleading.
Him: What does it mean? I won’t rest until I know.

I love this song and I can’t get it out of my head lately. Definitely a song that wakes me up in the morning. Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin) does my favorite version of the song. Great cover.
I’ll give you candy, give you diamonds, give you pills
Give you anything you want, hundred-dollar bills
I’ll even let you watch the shows you want to see
Just marry me, marry me, marry me.
